About Dr. Janell Wilson

Hi there! I'm the person behind The VBC Whisperer, and yes, I really do explain HEDIS measures using Beyoncé lyrics and other pop culture references.

I'm a physician with an MBA from Yale and an MD/PhD from Howard University. I've spent my career practicing in and implementing value-based care, but here's what makes me different: I believe VBC education should be memorable, practical, and dare I say... fun.

A little about me: I'm slightly obsessed with 90s pop culture, hip-hop and R&B (Usher and Beyoncé are my go-tos), romantic comedies, teen movies, and anything Disney. I love classic board games, Nintendo, and I have strong opinions about the best Tom and Jerry episodes (especially now that my children have me watching it again). My friends know me as the person who can quote "The Best Man" while explaining the basics of value-based care.

Why I do this: After years of watching physicians struggle with boring, theoretical VBC training, I realized something: we remember what resonates with us. When I started connecting clinical concepts to pop culture references, everything clicked. Suddenly, care gap closure made sense when explained through "Finding Nemo," and team huddles became clearer with a "High School Musical" framework.

My approach: I'm not here to overwhelm you with corporate consulting speak. I'm a physician who's been where you are, figured out what actually works, and wants to share it in a way that sticks. Think of me as your VBC-savvy friend who happens to be really fun to hang out with, too.

The bottom line: Value-based care doesn't have to be painful. It can be practical, profitable, and yes, even enjoyable. Let's make it happen together.

When I'm not creating VBC content, you'll find me planning my next Disney vacation or debating whether "Clueless" or "Don’t Tell the Mom the Babysitter’s Dead" is the superior 90s teen movie.
